Thomas Edison and William Dickinson invented the first projector in 1892. Eadweard Muybridge, a British photographer, invented the first movie projector, the Zoopraxiscope, in 1879.

Louis Le Prince improved on the movie projector in 1888. Finally, the Lumiere brothers succeeded in inventing the movie projector, “Cinematographe,” in 1895. It was hand-powered, small, and light. Also, it was able to record pictures.

Today projectors are critical appliances in offices and homes. Let’s look at the story of projector evolution.

Did a Projector Exist Before the Pre-Computer Era?

It wasn’t easy to invent the modern projector before the introduction of computers. Nonetheless, the creation of some devices during this period laid the foundation for modern projectors’ inventions.

One such device is the magic lantern. A Dutch scientist Christian Huygens invented it in 1659. More importantly, it was the first device invented to project images. As a result, it became popular in the entertainment and education sectors.

After that, engineers Leonhard Euler and Jacques Charles invented the episcope, opaque projector, and megascope.

In 1872, Henry Morton discovered a variant of the opaque projector that used an oxyhydrogen lamp. It was suitable when displaying images to a large audience.

Did Edison Invent the Projector?

If you are familiar with the Edison film, you are probably wondering whether Edison invented the first projector.

Well, Edison was motivated by his lecturer Eadweard Muybridge and started working on motion pictures. Muybridge used his Zoopraxiscope to explain the motion of animals.

The two had a discussion that stimulated Edison to design a photographing series of pictures viewed using a microscope. Later, he linked his device with a phonograph and started working on sound movies.

Edison’s work attracted the attention of W.K.L Dickson, a photographer. As a result, Edison worked on the inventions, whereas Dickson provided photography knowledge.

In 1892 the two invented the Kinetoscope, a peephole viewing device and a motion picture camera. Within no time, they introduced Edison’s films.

Edison is credited for introducing films in the commercial system. Later the Edison film company invented the Edison Vitascope, which was widely used as the first projector.

When Did Schools Start Using a Projector

In the past, there has been a wide use of projectors in numerous academic institutions. Projectors started being used in an interactive setting in 1930 in police ID work. Later the USA used it to train the world war army.

Overhead projectors made their way to school in the late 1950s. The use of the overhead computer declined recently after the introduction of computers in the classroom.

Use of projectors in the Digital era

The introduction of most digital formats was between the 1970s and 1990s. During this period, software and hardware innovation was gaining momentum. Subsequently, there were the inventions of modern projectors. The following are some digital projector inventions.

Document Cameras

Document cameras, also referred to as visual presenters, contain a high-resolution camera that enables them to capture real-time images. Besides, they would display the images on a screen.

There were models of document cameras used to connect video projectors. Moreover, they had more advanced aspects like the zoom feature that enabled users to enlarge images.

Within no time, the document cameras had superseded overhead projectors. Eventually, most people used them in the medical field, lecture halls, courtrooms, and offices.

Digital Light Processing Projectors

The invention of Digital Light Processing projectors was a breakthrough in discovering modern projectors. The past models, such as overhead projectors, were not effective when presenting videos.

In 1987, DR Larry Hornbeck invented the Digital Micromirror Device, the first Digital Light Processing projector. The public could access it from 1996.

Within no time, there was the adoption of the Digital Light Processing projector in the education and entertainment sector. Some people still use them today in schools and home theaters because they produce quality images and are cheap.

LCD Projectors

The invention of LCD technology led to the discovery of LCD projectors. Heat could easily damage the early models. Also, they had low resolution. Later, there was an improvement in LCD technology, and an advanced projector, “Imagina 90,” was discovered in 1990.

In the current times, Sony and Epson companies manufacture LCD used in projectors. Moreover, there was wide use of LCD projectors in different avenues.

The Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCoS) Projectors

Since LCoS was introduced in the 1970s, it has become among the technologies used in projectors today. It is a hybrid technology containing DLP and LCD chip properties. Consequently, it produces high-resolution images.

Sony was the first company to sell LCoS projector in 2005. Today, other companies like Canon and JVC manufacture LCoS Projectors.

Which are the latest projector inventions?

Manufacturers have been working to improve the projector technologies and produce more realistic images. Most modern projectors are versions of LCoS, DLP, and LCD technologies. Here are some of them.

UHD and 4K Projectors

UHD and 4K produce high-quality images that allow an engaging and cinematic experience. Since 2000 the two are widely used in digital cinemas.

Sony started by inventing the first 4k projector in 2004. Later other companies followed and embarked on manufacturing UKD and 4K for office and home users.

PICO Projectors

Numerous inventions and projector technology advancements resulted in the creation of lightweight and portable projectors. Pico LCoS and LCD are smaller projecting devices.

Laser Projectors

Laser Projectors are the latest in the discovery of projectors. They use any of the three technologies to produce images: LCoS, DLP, or LCD. Nonetheless, they use lasers as a theory light source instead of LEDs and lamps.

Most people prefer laser projectors because they produce high-quality images. Moreover, they have a long lifespan and generate less heat. In the past, people used laser projectors primarily in Cinemas. But, currently, some home users are using them.

Smart Projectors

Modern technology has been emphasizing the creation of smart devices that contain small form factors. Smart projectors have a dedicated storage processor and RAM alongside a projecting mechanism.

Moreover, they contain an operating system that allows you to display the stored images. You can also use a smart projector to connect to the internet via WI-FI or SIM network. Additionally, they are lightweight. Therefore portable.

The invention of modern projectors has been a continuous process over the years. Technology has enabled the bound of improvement to modern projectors.

The advancements have also resulted in improving the image quality displayed in projectors. There is a notable difference in terms of weight and durability in modern projectors compared to the early ones.

Currently, there is wide use of projectors in schools, business meetings, cinema halls, and homes.
